I sometimes talk and write about the disadvantages to families permanently connected to their cell phone.  With the increase use of cell phones and smart phones (I really think that Siri is smarter than me), in my opinion valuable conversation within the family has been decreased.  According to statistics, nearly 95% of Americans have cell phones.  According to our cell phone bill, most of the cell phone use in our home is through texting.  Texting keeps us “connected” many days, but there are times that I really miss the verbal “I love you” as opposed to “i luv u”.  So, as with most things in life…there is good and the not so good.  Well, one of the good things about texting and cell phones was demonstrated to me yesterday when I met with two women who were promoting the Text4Baby campaign.  This program was launched by the National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition and the wireless telephone industry in 2010.

Text4Baby is a free text service offered nationwide to pregnant and new Moms.  Moms (and Dads and even Grandparents) can enroll in the service by sending the text message “Baby” to 511411, or if you would like the Spanish version “Bebe” to 511411.  You will then receive three text messages each week timed to your due date or your baby’s birthday.  You will get FREE text messages on health tips, prenatal care, infant care, immunizations, nutrition, oral health, safety, recalls, and much more.  When I looked at the information that will be sent out, it was impressive and valuable.  This is a great way to promote healthy parents and children and reach parents in a way that most of us communicate.  So, use your cell phone and texting in a good way and let’s continue to promote healthy families….just don’t read the text messages you receive while driving!  Happy Friday!

Take a breath, enjoy the joyful moments of each day, and remember you don’t have to be perfect to be the perfect parent.
